Terms of Service
Last updated 27 September 2026
By using OpenSplit you agree to these terms. They are short on purpose.
What OpenSplit is
OpenSplit is a tool for recording shared expenses and working out who owes whom. It is free to use. Recording an expense is never limited, capped or gated, there are no adverts, and there is nothing to buy.
What OpenSplit is not
OpenSplit does not handle money. It is not a bank, a wallet, a payment processor or a money transmitter. It never holds, moves, transfers or settles funds. If you add a UPI ID, the app can hand the details to your own payment app — the payment happens entirely between you, that app and your bank, and OpenSplit is not part of it and does not know whether it happened.
Balances shown in the app are a calculation over what you and the people in your groups typed in. They are not a statement of account, not legal or financial advice, and not evidence of a debt. Sorting out what anyone actually owes anyone is between you.
Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping access to your email or Google account secure. You may delete your account at any time from Account → Delete account; see the Privacy Policy for exactly what that removes.
A guest account is synchronized, but has no email or Google identity. The device that created it holds the only session until you attach a sign-in method. That session lapses after a year without opening the app. If it is lost or lapses, the data may remain on the service while you can no longer prove that the guest account is yours.
Your content
What you record stays yours. You give us only what is needed to run the service: storing your data, syncing it to your own devices, and showing it to the people you share a group with.
Remember that a shared group is shared. Expenses you add are visible to everyone in that group, and stay part of that group's record even after you leave or delete your account.
Acceptable use
Do not use OpenSplit to break the law, to harass anyone, to store data you have no right to store, or to attack, overload or probe the service. Do not attempt to reach data belonging to people who have not shared a group with you.
Availability
OpenSplit is provided as it is, with no warranty of any kind. We do not promise it will be available, uninterrupted or free of defects. We may change or discontinue the hosted service — the app is designed to keep working on your device without it, and you can export any group as CSV or JSON at any time.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for any loss arising from a payment you did or did not make on the basis of what the app showed you.
Suspension
We may suspend or remove an account that is being used to attack the service or to harm other people using it.
Open source
OpenSplit is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3. Those terms cover the software; these terms cover the hosted service we run. You are free to run your own.
Changes
We may update these terms. If a change is material we will update the date above and say so in the app before it takes effect.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India.
